Veteran’s Day, Don’t Be a Day Late
I am a day late and a dollar short regarding Veteran’s Day. I thought of it yesterday and sent a few texts to people I know who have served. Today as I write this, I am remembering others that I failed to think of yesterday. The day passed and I moved on.
This morning as I put on my weighted backpack to get some exercise rucking, I thought briefly of my experience at USAF Basic Training. My rucksack looks a bit military, that’s probably why. I put on a podcast as I ventured out - Mike Rowe was interviewing Clinton Romesha who was awarded the Medal of Honor in 2013 for his actions in 2009 during a 12-hour battle at Combat Outpost Keating in eastern Afghanistan. Clint shared his story. I won’t write about it here. I won’t talk about it for a while either, the lump in my throat would likely choke me out if I tried. I’m just going to recommend you listen to it.
You can find the podcast on Spotify, TuneIn or just go to Podcast – Mike Rowe. It is Episode 413.
Don’t be a day late and a dollar short.
Don’t be a day late. If you know a veteran, particularly someone who served in combat, reach out to them today. If you love them, tell them so. If you are grateful for their service, tell them so. If they work beside you today, grab a cup of coffee with them. Do it today.
Don’t be a dollar short. Many veterans are still fighting those battles even after coming home. Many still lose their lives to suicide. There are non-profits that are working hard to help them. They deserve us to be willing to fight for them. Find a non-profit doing that work and contribute. Do it today.
